Patna : New Zealand (NZ) were 203/5 in 68 overs at stumps on day 1 of the first test against Sri Lanka (SL) at Galle International Stadium, Galle, Sri Lanka, on August 14, 2019, with Ross Taylor unbeaten on 86 in 131 balls hitting 6 fours and Mitchell Santner 8 not out. SL spinner Akila Dananjaya, 25, took 5/57 in 22 overs.

Opting to bat after winning the toss, New Zealand lost their first wicket that of opener Tom Latham when the score was 64. Lotham fell to Akila Dananjaya for 33. At the same score his captain Kane Williamson fell to spinner Akila Dananjaya for a duck making it 64/2.

Opener Jeet Raval followed his captain soon getting out to Dananjaya for 33 making it 71/3. Ross Talor and Henry Nicholls then added 100 runs for the 4th wicket. Nicholls fell to Dananjaya for 42 in 78 balls hitting 2 fours and it was 171/4. Wicketkeeper W J Watling fell to Dananjaya for 1 and it was 179/5 in 60.2 overs. Taylor and Santner have so far added 24 runs for the 6th wicket.
