Patna : New Zealand defeated West Indies by five wickets in the first ODI at Cobham Oval ( New), Whangarei, New Zealand, on December 20, 2017, with four overs to spare. Batting first, West Indies made 248/9 in 50 overs. New Zealand medium fast bowler Doug Bracewell took 4/55 in 8 overs while leg spinner T Astle took 3/33 in 10 overs. Fast bowler Leguson took 2/49. Trent Boult and Tim Southee, New Zealand’s two famous fast bowlers, went wicketless leaking 48 and 49 runs respectively.

New Zealand made 249 in 46 overs. Former captain Ross Taylor remained not out on 49 in 76 balls hitting only 2 fours while T Astle was batting on 15. Earlier, openers George Worker and Colin Munro gave a solid start to the team and were involved in a108 run stand. George Worker made 57 in 66 balls hitting 8 fours whileMunro made 49 in 36 balls also hitting 8 fours. Captain Kane Williamson made 38 in 45 deliveries hitting 5 fours. Tom Lathan score 17 in 19 balls while H Nicholls made 17 in 21 balls.

For West Indies, Opener E Levis made 76 in 100 balls hitting 7 fours and a six while Chris Gayle made 22 in 31 balls hitting 3 fours and a six. They were involved in a partnership of  40. R Powell made 59 in 50 balls hitting 2 fours and 4 sixes while S Hetmyer made 29 in 42 balls hitting 4 fours.
