Patna : New Zealand (NZ) defeated Sri Lanka (SL) by 5 wickets in the 1st T20I at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele, Sri Lanka, on September 1, 2019, late night, with Ross Taylor scoring 48 in 29 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes and Colin de Grandhomme scoring 44 in 28 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes. Chasing a target of 175, NZ scored  175/5 in 19.3 overs to lead the three-match T20I series 1-0. Ross Taylor was declared Player of the Match.

Daryl Mitchell remained unbeaten on 25 in 19 balls hitting 2 sixes while Mitchell Santner remained unbeaten on 14 in 8 balls hitting a six. NZ lost both its openers : Martin Guptil and Colin Munro, with only 18 runs on board. Munro fell Lasith Malings for zero making it 1/1. Guptil fell to spinner Akila Dananjaya for 11 making it 18/2. Tim Seifert (wk) fell to spinner Wanindu Hasaranga for 15 and it was 39/3.

Taylor and Grandhomme added 79 runs for the 4th wicket. Grandhomme fell to Malinga making it 118/4. Taylor fell to Hasaranga and it was 144/5. For Sri Lanka, Lasith Malinga took 2/23 in 4 overs.

Earlier opting to bat after winning the toss, SL scored 174/5 in 20 overs with opener Kusan Mendis scoring 79 in 53 balls hitting 8 fours and 2 sixes while Niroshan Dickwella ( wk) scored 33 in 25 balls with 2 fours. Dickwella was run out. NZ captain Tim Southee took 2/20 in 4 overs.

Chasing a SL won the toss and opted to bat.
