Patna : New Zealand (NZ) defeated Pakistan by 101 runs in the 1st test at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, NZ, on Day 5 to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match test series as fast bowlers Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Kyle Jamieson, Neil Wagner, and spinner Mitchell Santner took 2 wickets each. NZ captain Kane Williamson was named Player Of The Match for scoring 129 in first innings. Williamson said his bowlers were outstanding in the match.

Set a target of 373 runs to win the match, Pakistan, who had scored 239 runs in their first innings,  were all out for 271 in 123.3 overs in their 2nd innings with Fawad Alam scoring 102 in 269 balls with 14 fours and captain Mohd Rizwan(wk) scoring 60 in 191 balls with 6 fours.

Resuming at their overnight score of 71/3, Pakistan lost their 4th wicket that of Azhar Ali when the team score was 75. Azhar Ali fell to Trent Boult for 38 in 120 balls with 4 fours. Fawad Alam and Mohd Rizwan then added 165 runs for the 5th wicket.

Rizwan fell to  fast medium bowler Kyle Jamieson for 60 and it was 240/5. Fawad Alam soon followed him as he fell to fast medium bowler Neil Wagner  for 102 and it was 242/6. Spinner Yasir Shah fell to Jamieson for zero making it 251/7.  Medium fast bowler Faheem Ashraf fell to Wagner for 19 and it was 259/8.  Medium fast bowler Mohd Abbas fell to Santner for 1 making it 261/9. Fast bowler Naseem Shah also fell to spinner Santner for 1 and Pakistan were all out for 271.

NZ had scored 431 in their first innings and declared their 2nd innings at 180/5.
