Patna : With Narendra Modi ( NaMo) wave sweeping across major parts of India, BJP-led NDA registered a massive victory in the General Elections 2019 returning to power for the second consecutive term. In a first of its kind in India, PM Modi turned the incumbency factor into his biggest strength in the General Elections relying heavily on the welfare schemes including PM Ayushman Yojna, construction of toilets, pension scheme for the 50 crore workers of unorganised sector, and Kisan Samman Nidhi during electioneering.
The BJP has so far won 266 seats out of 348 seats it was leading. Union Minister Smriti Irani turned out to be the giant killer defeating Congress President Rahul Gandhi in Amethi parliamentary constituency (PC). Rahul had won the Amethi seat in 2004, 2009, and 2014. Rahul has, however, won from Wayanad in Kerala. Actor Shatrghuna Sinha, who often said the BJP is a one man show and two man army and that PM Modi had turned the Modi Lahar of 2014 into ‘Kahar’, suffered a humiliating defeat in Patna Sahib PC from where he had won in 2019 and 2014. Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad defeated Sinha by 2.84 lakh votes.
The BJP made major gain in West Bengal, Odisha, and Telangana. The BJP has won 52 of the 80 seats in UP and was leading on another 10 seats demolishing the caste arithmetic of SP-BSP combine making development a major poll issue. The BJP also won 25 of the 28 seats in Karnataka. The NDA, which was leading in 39 out of the 40 PCs in Bihar, has so far won 35 seats riding on ‘TsuNaMo’.
PM Narendra Modi retained his Varanasi seat defeating his Congress rival by over 4.5 lakh votes. BJP president Amit Shah was elected from Gandhinagar PC in Gujarat by a margin of 5.57 lakh votes against his Congress rival C J Chavda.
