Patna : Unseeded Naomi Osaka, 20, Japan, upset 20th seed Daria Kasatkina, 20, Russia, in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, to lift the women’s singles title at Indian Wells Masters tennis tournament at California, USA. Osaka was voted newcomer of the year in 2016.
With her win at the Indian Wells Masters, Naomi Osaka, who was born at Osaka, Japan, has jumped to 22nd rank in the WTA rankings released on March 19, 2019, while Kasatkina has jumped to 11th rank by reaching the final. Osaka was ranked 40th before the start of Indian Wells Masters while Kasatkina was ranked 19th.
Simona Halep, 26, Romania, retains her Number 1 position despite losing in the semi-finals of Indian Wells Master to Naomi Osaka. Australian Open winner Caroline Wozniacki, 27, Denmark, is Number 2 while Wimbledon Champion Garbine Muguruza,24, is Number 3. Wozniacki had lost in the Round of 16 at Indian Wells while Muguruza had lost in the second round. Elina Svitolina, 23, Ukraine, is Number 4 while French Open Champion Jelena Ostapenko, 20, Latvia, jumped to number 5 in the WTA rankings. Jelena had lost in Round of 32 at Indian Wells.
