Nadal, Nishikori, Tsitsipas, Fognini enter Round of 16 at Madrid Open, Delpo upset

Patna : World No 2 and winner of 17 Grand Slam singles titles Rafael Nadal, Spain, World No 7 Kei Nishikori, Japan, World No 9 Stefanos Tsitsipas, 20, Greece, World No 12 Fabio Fognini, Italy, and winner of 3 Grand Slam singles titles Stan Wawrinka, 34, Switzerland, advanced to the 3rd round of Madrid Open, Spain, on May 8, 2019. But, World No 32 Laslo Djere, 23, Serbia, upset World No 8 Juan Martin del Porto, 30, Argentina.

Second seed Nadal beat World No 30 Felix Auger Aliassime, 18, Canada, 6-3, 6-3 in 1 hr 37 minutes in the 2nd round on May 8, 2019, evening. Nadal broke Aliassime’s service 4 times in the match while the latter broke his service once. Nadal also won 5 games in a row in the match. Aliassime served 3 Aces in the match to 2 by Nadal. Both the players committed 3 double faults each. Nadal will face World No 37 Frances Tiafoe,  21, USA, in the Round of 16.

Nishikori beat World No 109 Hugo Dellien, 25, Bolivia,  7-5, 7-5 in 2 hr 1 minute to reach Round of 16. Nishikori broke qualifier Dellien’s service 5 times while the latter broke his service 3 times. Nishikori served 6 Aces in the match to 2 by Dellien. Nishikori won 3 games in a row in the match to 4 by Dellien. Nishikori won 47 service points to 54 by Dellien.

Fognini beat World No 48 John Millman, 29, Australia, 6-2, 6-2 to enter the Round of 16. None of the two players fired any Ace in the match. Fognini broke Millman’s service 5 times in the match while the latter broke his service once. Fognini also won 7 games in a row in the match to 2 by Millman.

Tsitsipas, the 8th seed, beat World No 56 Adrian Mannarino, 30, France, 6-2, 7-5 to advance to Round of 16. Tsitsipas fired 6 Aces in the match to 3 by Mannarino. Tsitsipas broke Mannarino’s service 4 times in the match while the latter broke his service only once. He also won 5 games in a row during the match.

World No 34 Wawrinka beat World No 26 Guido Pella, 28, Argentina, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the Round of 16. Both the players served 2 A ces each in the match. Wawrinka broke Pella’s service twice in the match. Wawrinka also won 3 games in a row in the match. Wawrinka will face Nishikori in the Round of 16.

Djere upset del Porto, the 2009 US Open Champion, in three sets 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 to reach Round of 16.  Delpo has returned  to the game after 4 months. Djere will face World No 11 Marin Cilic, Croatia, in the Round of 16.
