Patna : World No 2 Rafael Nadal, 32, Spain, the 2nd seed, advanced to the semi-finals of Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, Monaco, defeating World No 35 Guido Pella, 28, Argentina, in straight sets in the quarter-finals on April 19, 2019, night, at Monte-Carlo Country Club. Nadal beat Pella 7-6, 6-3 in 2hr 20 minutes in the quarter-finals.

Nadal, who is bidding for his 12th Monte-Carlo title,  broke Pella’s service 7 times in the match while the latter broke his service 5 times. Nadal fired 4 Aces in the match to just b y Pella.  Nadal’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve ( 58% & 50 %) was better than that of Pella ( b47% & 46 %). Nadal won 4 games in a row in the match to 3 by Pella, who had defeated World No 11 Marin Cilic, 3e0, Croatia, in the 2nd round. Nadal, the winner of 17 Grand Slam titles, committed 3 double faults in the match to 4 by Pella. Pella won 40 service points to 39 by Nadal.

Pella started the match in a whirlwind fashion breaking Nadal’s service in the first game itself. But, Nadal broke back to make it 1-1. Pella again broke Nadal in the third game and was soon leading 4-1. But, Nadal rallied back strongly and made it 4-4 and  finally won the first set in tie-breaker. Pella though forced Nadal work hard for his victory. Nadal broke Pella’s service in the first game of 2nd set and was soon leading  4-1.
