Patna : Winner of three Grand Slam titles Andy Murray, 31, Great Britain, and former Australian Open finalist Jo Wilfried Tsonga, 33, France, entered the Round of 16 at Brisbane International, an ATP 250 point tournament, at Brisbane, Queensland, Australi, on January 1, 2019.
Murray, who is coming back after a long injury lay off and is ranked World No 240 in the ATP rankings, beat World No 234 James Duckworth, 26, Australia, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round. Murray fired 6 Aces in the match. He, however, also committed 4 double faults to 2 by Duckworth. Murray won 3 break points while Duckworth won just one. Murray also won 3 games in a row. Murray will play World No 16 Daniil Medvedev, 22, Russia, in the Round of 16.
World No 239 Tsonga beat World No 146 Thanasi Kokkinakis, 22, 7-6, 6-4 in the first round on January 1. Tsonga fired 11 Aces in the match to 3 by Kokkinakis.
World No 31 Alex de Minaur, 19, Australia, beat World No 107 Alexei Popyrin,19, Australia, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round even as the latter fired 5 Aces. Popyrin though committed 5 double faults to 2 by Minaur. Minaur won 5 games in a row to 2 by Popyrin. Minaur also won 5 break points to just 1 by Popyrin.
World No 63, Denis Kudla, 26, USA, beat World No 49 Taylor Fritz, 21, USA, in a three set thriller 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 to enter the Round of 16. Fritz though hammered 22 Aces in the match to 8 by Kudla. Both the players committed 4 double faults each in the match. Kudla will face World No 9 Kei Nishikori, 29, Japan, in the Round of 16.
