Muguruza, Sharapova enter French Open Round of 16

Patna : World No 3 in WTA rankings Garbine Muguruza, Spain, and World No 30 Maria Sharapova, Russia, entered the 4th round of French Open 2018 on June 2, 2018. Reigning Wimbledon Champion Muguruza, a former French Open Champion, defeated Samantha Stosur, 34, Australia, the 2011 US Open champion, 6-0, 6-2, in the third round on Philippe Chatrier Court, Roland Garros, Paris.

Sharapova, winner of 5 Grand Slam singles titles, defeated World No 6 Karolina Pliskova, Czech Republic, 6-2, 6-1, in the third round on Philippe Chatrier Court to enter Round of 16. Sharapova committed 5 double faults in the match compared to 4 by Pliskova. Sharapova fired 3 aces compared to 1   by Pliskova. But, Sharapova, the two time French Open champion, won 5 break points compared to just 1 by Pliskova. Sharapova won 5 games in a row during the match.

World No 16 Elise Mertens, Belgium, also entered the fourth round defeating World No 25 Daria Gavrilova, Australia, 6-3, 6-1, in the 3rd round on Court 1.

World No 10 and 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens, 25, USA, defeated World No 57 Camila Giorgi, Italy, 4-6, 6-1, 8-6, on Court 18 in the 3rd round to book a place in the Round of 16. Giorgi fired 6 aces in the match compared to 2 by Stephens but she also committed 5 double faults compared to just 1 by the American. Stephens also won 8 break points compared to 5 by Giorgi.

But, World No 24 Anett Kontaveit, Estonia, defeated World No 8 and two time Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova, 28, Czech Republic, 7-6, 7-6, in a major upset in the tournament to enter the Round of 16.

World No 39 Lesia Tsurenko, 29, Ukraine, upset World No 18 Magdalena Rybarikova, 29, Slovakia, 6-2, 6-4, in the third round on Court 7 to enter the Round of 16. Rybarikova had lost in the semi-finals of Wimbledon 2017.
