New Delhi :  Minister of State (I/C) for Culture and Minister of State for Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Dr Mahesh Sharma, in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha on April 4, 2018, informed the House that Ministry of Culture has taken up a project named ‘JATAN’ in collaboration with C-DAC, Pune, for creating an online digital repository of museum collections on the national portal www.museumsofindia.gov.in for the museums under the administrative control of this Ministry. Till now, 1,08,881 art objects have been digitized and uploaded on the portal.

Answering to a sub- question, the Minister informed that Digitization of collections of old, rare and brittle documents/manuscripts/books in the Libraries under Ministry of Culture is a continuous process. Till now, National Library, Kolkata, and Central Secretariat Library, New Delhi, have digitized a total of 87 lakh pages of rare books etc. Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Public Library, Patna, and Rampur Raza Library, Rampur, have digitized 22.50 lakh folios of manuscripts, he said, according to a PIB release.

There are six museums under the administrative control of Ministry of Culture. They are :  National Museum, New Delhi, National Gallery of Modern Art (branches at Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru), Indian Museum, Kolkata, Salar Jung Museum, Hyderabad, and Allahabad Museum, Allahabad. Apart from them, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sanghralaya, and Asiatic Society, Kolkata ,are also under the administrative control of Ministry of Culture.
