Medvedev, Raonic, Agut enter 3rd round of Wimbledon Championships, Wawrinka upset

Patna : World No 13 Daniil Medvedev, 23, Russia, World No 17 Milos Raonic, 28, Canada, World No 22 Roberto Bautista Agut, 31, Spain, and World No 2e David Goffin,  28, Belgium, entered the 3rd round of Wimbledon Championships at London, UK, on July 3, 2019.

Medvedev beat World No 101 Alexei Popyrin, 19, Australia, in four-sets 6-7, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round. The Russian won 5 break points in the match to 1 by Popyrin. He also fired 11 Aces in the match to 6 by the Australian. Medvedev won 4 games in a row to 2 by Popyrin. The Russian won 83 service points to 79 by the Australian.

Raonic, the 2016 Wimbledon finalist, beat World No 76 Robin Haase, 32, Netherlands, 7-6, 7-6, 7-6 in the second round. Raonic hammered 31 Aces in the match to 9 by Haase. He won 2 break points to 1 by Hasse. The Canadian won 3 games in a row in the match to 2 by Haase.

Agut entered the 3rd round after his second round opponent World No 221 Steve Darcis, 35, Belgium, retired in the third set due to injury having lost the first two sets. Agut was leading 6-3, 6-2, 4-2 when Darcis retired.

Goffin beat World No 81 Jeremy Chardy, 32, France, 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 in the second round. Goffin won 6 break points to just 1 by Chardy. Goffin fired 9 Aces in the match to 7 Chardy. Goffin also won 3 games in a row in the match.

But, World No 63 Reilly Opelka, 21, USA, upset World No 19 and winner of three Grand Slam titles Stan Wawrinka, 34, Switzerland, 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 8-6 in the 2nd round. Opelka hammered 23 Aces in the match to 17 by Wawrinka. The American won 3 break points to 2 by Wawrinka. Both the players won 3 games each in a row.

World No 89 Thomas Fabbiano, 30, Italy, also entered the 3rd round defeating World No 80 Ivo Karlovic, 40, Croatia, in a five-set thriller 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 in the 2nd round. Karlovic though hammered 39 Aces in the match to 9 by Fabbiano. Fabbiano won 3 break points to none by Karlovic. The Italian also won 3 games in a row in the match.
