Patna : World No 4 Daniil Medvedev, 23, Russia, and World No 12 Fabio Fognini, 32, Italy, entered the quarter-finals of Shanghai Masters, an ATP World Tour 1,000 points event, at Shanghai, China, on October 10, 2019, winning their respective Round of 16 matches in straight sets.

Medvedev, the 3rd seed, beat qualifier and World No 248 Vasek Pospisil, 29, Canada, 7-6, 7-5 in a tough contest in Round of 16 in 2 hr 5 minutes. Medvedev, the US Open finalist and winner of Cincinnati Masters title in 2019, hammered 11 Aces in the match to 2 by the Canadian. The Russian won 3 break points to 2 by the Canadian, who gave the World No 4 a run for his money. Medvedev won 4 games in a row in the match to 3 by Pospisil. The Russian won 59 service points to 51 by the Canadian, who was leading 4-1 in the first set tie-break.

Tenth seed Fognini beat World No 9 Karen Khachanov, 23, Russia, the 7th seed, 6-3, 7-5 in 1 hr 46 minutes in the Round of 16. The Italian won 3 break points in the match to 1 by the Russian. Fognini won 3 games in a row to 2 by Khachanov. The Russian though fired 11 Aces in the match to 3 by the Italian. Fognini won 44 service points to 41 by the Russian. Fognini had won Monte-Carlo Masters 1,000 in April 2019.
