Patna : World No 4 Daniil Medvedev, 24, Russia, beat reigning US Open Champion and World No 3 Dominic Thiem, 27, Austria, in a tough three-set battle lasting 2hr 43 minutes to lift the Nitto ATP Finals singles title, the biggest title of his career, on November 22, 2020, late night, securing 1,500 Rankings points.

Medvedev beat Thiem 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 in final at O2 Arena, London, UK, battling back from one set down. The year end tournament has produced six different champions in last 6 years.

Both the players won one break point each in the match. Both the players also won 3 games each in a row in the match. The Russian, in all, won 115 points to 112 by Thiem. The Russian though bombed 12 Aces in the match to 7 by the Austrian. Medvedev committed 3 double faults to 1 by the Austrian. Medvedev’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve ( 73% & 58%) was better than that of Thiem’s ( 68% & 47%).

Medvedev, who defeated World No 1 and five-time champion Novak Djokovic, Serbia, in a Group stage math and World No 2 Rafael Nadal, Spain, in the semi-finals, remained undefeated in the tournament beating World No 1, World No 2, and World No 3 en route the singles title. Nokolay Davydenko, Russia, had won the ATP Finals title in 2009. Medvedev had won Paris Masters 1,000 title, his third ATP Masters title, recently. He had remained winless in 2019 ATP Finals tournament. Medvedev, after the match, said Thiem was playing unbelievable tennis this year.
