Ara : Patients at the Ara Sadar Hospital are a harried lot as all the doctors abstained from duty on November 21, 2018, in protest against thrashing of three doctors of Sadar Hospital, Ara, on November 20, 2018, by security guards allegedly at the behest of Bhojpur District Magistrate Sanjeev Kumar. As a result Out Patient Department (OPD) and emergency services at the hospital remained paralysed and the patients were forced to go to private clinics though the Bhojpur district administration had deputed doctors from Ayush department. The Ayush doctors are referring the patients to Patna Medical College and Hospital frequently.
On November 21, 2018, a five- member team of BHSA from Patna led by Dr Ranveer Kumar had a meeting with the doctors and the members of IMA, Ara branch, at the Sadar Hospital, and they decided to continue their strike and demanded immediate transfer of Bhojpur DM. It was also decided that all the Primary Health Centres, Referral Hospitals, Additional Primary Health Centres, Ara Sadar Hospital, and all the private clinics will remain close on November 22 against highhandedness of Bhojpur DM.
Due to unified stand of doctors, Bhojpur DM Sanjeev Kumar along with all the senior officials of the district reached Ara Sadar Hospital at about 12 noon and tried to have a meeting with the doctors to resolve the issue but not a single doctors except the Civil Surgeon Dr Jagdish Singh and Superintendent, Sadar Hospital, Dr Satish Kumar Sinha, talked to him. Finally, the DM said that he would try to have a talk with the doctors in the evening and added that alternate arrangements would be made in the interest of patients. The DM said video conference system would continue as it is in the interest of patients.
Bhojpur DM Sanjeev Kumar, with a view to streamlining health service at Sadar Hospital, Ara, and also to ensuring presence of doctors on time at the hospital, held meeting with the doctors of the hospital through video conference on November 20, 2018, evening, to direct them to mark their attendance through biometric system and to confirm their presence in the hospital. Dr T A Ansari was on emergency duty and so he could not attend the video conference of the DM that infuriated him. The DM allegedly sent his two body guards to the Sadar Hospital for the custody of Dr T A Ansari.
The body guards caught Dr T A Ansari by arms and took him to the residence of the DM. Hearing the news of his custody, President, Bihar Health Service Association (BHSA), Bhojpur, Dr Naresh Prasad, and Secretary, BHSA, Dr Arun reached there and queried about the incident. But, the guards thrashed them too.
The order of DM to mark attendance through biometric system and confirm their presence through the video conference had already angered the doctors and after the thrashing of three doctors, they boycotted their work including emergency duty and went on strike. BHSA and the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Ara branch, on November 20 late evening resolved to paralyse health services till November 22, 2018.
Dr Rita, an Ayush doctor, said that patients have no faith in their treatment and they prefer to go to private doctors.
