Patna :  Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) candidate Prince Raj, nephew of party supremo and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, on October 24, 2019, won the Samastipur (SC) parliamentary seats in the by-poll held following the death of his father and sitting MP Ram Chandra Paswan, 57, in July 2019.  The NDA has thus retained the seat. The by-poll was held on October 21, 2019. Ram Chandra Paswan was a four-term member of the Lok Sabha.

Prince Raj, the head of student wing of the LJP,  defeated Congress candidate Dr Ashok Kumar by 1,02,080 votes. Prince Raj secured 3,90,194 votes while Dr Ashok Kumar got 2,88,114 votes in the by-poll. The LJP nominee got 49.48 % of the votes while the Congress nominee got 36.54 % votes. Ram Vilas Paswan’s son Chirag Paswan is party MP from Jamui.
