Patna:  The main accused in Bihar’s Intermediate examinations result scam and sacked chairman of Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh and his wife Usha Sinha, a former JD(U) MLA,were arrested from an “ashram” at Shivalaya under Bhelupur police station at Varanasi, UP, on Monday morning.  They were absconding since June 8 when a Patna court had issued arrest warrants against the couple. Police also arrested Prabhat Jaiswal, a liquor trader, on charge of harbouring an absconding couple. Jaiswal’s vehicle was also seized.

Senior SP of Patna Manu Maharaaj and his Varanasi counterpart Akash Kulhari said a joint team of special investigation team (SIT) of Patna police and crime branch of Varanasi police tracked the couple at Kinara Ashram, Varanasi. Varanasi SSP said the SIT of Patna police had contacted  Bhelupur police station as they had information about the couple’s location in the area. Crime branch of Varanasi police co-operated with Patna police and succeeded in arresting the couple on Monday morning. They were produced before a judicial magistrate at Varanasi from where Patna police sought transit remand of the absconding couple wanted in the Intermediate examinations scam.

Former CM Jeetan Ram Manjhi alleged the couple were staying at the residence of a minister and not at Varanasi. He demanded a CBI probe into the Inter examination scam.

Usha Sinha was principal of Ganga Devi Mahila College here from where she was removed by the state government following registration of an FIR against her. She  was charged with running an unauthorised examination and evaluation centre for the examinees who appeared from Vishun Ray College. All the toppers in arts and science streams at the examinations were from this college. Its principal Bachcha Rai was  arrested last week by police.

Police have arrested principals of four different colleges at Patna, Muzaffarpur and Hajipur in connection with the scam. Three employees of Bihar School Examination Board’s confidential section have also been taken into custody.

Economic offences wing (EOW) of Bihar police too has been associated with the investigation of the case and asked to probe the ill gotten assets of scam accused. Bachcha Rai had 12 colleges run by him and his family. He had allegedly purchased 200 acre of land in -Vaishali and Muzaffarpur and used to collect Rs one lakh each for arranging evaluation of answer- sheets, change of answer-sheets for the examinees.

Lalkeshwar Singh as BSEB chairman had constituted a judicial commission headed by a retired judge of Patna High Court to probe the scam. However, Bihar CM cancelled the appointment of the judicial commission saying Singh was not authorised to set up such a commission which was the prerogative of the government only. Singh was sacked the same day .
