Patna: Police arrested one Shankar Kumar in connection with demand of rangdari ( extortion amount) from PMCH superintendent Dr Lakhindra Prasad. Prasad had been receiving threatening calls regularly and the caller had asked him to pay an extortion of Rs 50 lakh.
Patna Senior SP (SSP) Manu Maharaaj on November 8 said that he received information on November. 7 that Dr Prasad had been receiving threatening calls and the caller threatened to kill him if he failed to give Rs 50 lakh as rangdari. He said that an FIR was lodged with the Rajiv Nagar police station in this connection the same day.
The SSP said that a special team comprising DSP (Law& Order), Rajiv Nagar police station SHO and members of Special Cell was constituted at the instance of City SP (Central). The Special team was also assigned the task to provide security to the PMCH Superintendent, he said adding that during investigation of the case, the team came to know that the person whom the caller had directed Superintendent to hand over the extortion money is a native of Loha ka Pul under Mehdiganj police station, Patna City, and he was identified as Shankar Kumar. The SSP said that the police team arrested Shankar. He said that he was earlier sent to Beur jail in connection with a brawl with his wife.
The SSP said that Shankar’s wife used to visit jail to meet him after a compromise took place between the husband and wife. He said that Shankar developed friendship with another prisoner Sonu Sao, who was also in the jail in connection with a case lodged against him with Airport police station. The SSP said that Sonu was allegedly eyeing for Shankar’ s wife and had quarrel with Shankar over the issue inside the jail. He said that Shankar told police that Sonu had threatened him with dire consequences and it was he who made the threatening call to PMCH superintendent to implicate him in a false case.
The SSP said that police team carried out raid inside Beur jail and recovered the cellphone used in seeking rangdari from Dr Prasad. The SSP said that Sonu confessed before the police team that he had made the call to implicate Shankar. Rajiv Nagar police would take Sonu on remand, he added.
