Muzaffarpur: The Income-tax (IT) department has asked for details of gold, diamond and other jewellery sold by the jewellers of Sonerpatti, Muzaffarpur, between November 8 and November 10, 2016, triggering panic among the jewellers. The NDA government had scrapped currencies of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations on November 8 evening.

The IT department move follows reports that the people having black money had resorted to huge purchase of jewellery after these  currencies were scrapped. Gold jewellery worth about Rs 28 crore were purchased from the Sonerpatti  jewellery shops alone without taking the identity proof from the customers including contrctors, doctors, engineers, politicians and officials.

Joint Commissioner, IT, Muzaffarpur, Mohammad Shadab, said that the department was trying its best to locate and seize black money and in this connection had asked for details of jewellery sold recently from the jewellers.
