Patna : World No 23 Denis Shapovalov, 19, Canada, upset World No 10 Stefanos Tsitsipas, 20, Greece, in the Round of 16 of Miami Open at Florida, USA, on March 27, 2019, to advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Shapovalov beat Tsitsipas in a tough three-set contest 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 in 2hr 14 minutes at Hard Rock Stadium, Florida, USA. Both the players won 2 break points each in the match. Both of them also won three games each in the match. But, Shapovalov won 71 service points to 54 by Tsitsipas. Shapovalov’s winning percentage on his first serve (74%) was better than that of Tsitsipas (68%). But, Tsitsipas’ winning percentage on second serve (70%) was much better than that of Shapovalov (55%). Tsitsipas fired 7 Aces in the match to 5 by Shapovalov.
World No 7 Kevin Anderson, 32, South Africa, also advanced to the quarter-finals of the tournament beating World No 77 Jordan Thompson, 24, Australia, 7-5, 7-5 in 1 hr 51 minutes in the Round of 16 on March 27, 2019. Anderson fired 8 Aces in the match to 6 by Thompson. Anderson broke Thompson’s service thrice in the match while the latter broke his service only once. Both the players won 3 games each in a row. Anderson’s winning percentage on his first and second serve (73% & 67 %) was much better than that of Thompson (64% & 58%).
World No 34 Frances Tiafoe, 21, USA, advanced to the quarter-finals defeating World No 20 David Goffin,28, Belgium, 7-5, 7-6 in the 4th round. Goffin though fired 11 Aces in the match to 3 by Tiafoe. But, he also committed 3 double faults to 1 by Tiafoe. Tiafoe, however, won 4 break points to 3 by Goffin. Tiafoe also won 4 games in a row to 2 by Goffin. Tiafoe’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve ( 72 % & 64 %) was better than that of Goffin (69 % & 50 %).
Canadian teenage sensation Felix Agur-Aliassime, the World No 57, and World No 13 Borna Coric, 22, Croatia, also advanced to the quarter-finals of the tournament on March 26, 2019, late night.
Aliassime, 18, upset World No 19 Nikoloz Basilashvili, 27, Georgia, 7-6, 6-4 in the 4th round. Aliassime fired 13 Aces in the match to 4 by Basilashvili. Aliassime won 3 break points to 2 by Basilashvili. Basilashvili committed 8 double faults to 4 by Aliassime. The Canadian won 4 games in a row in the match to 2 by Basilashvili.
Coric beat World No 33 Nick Kyrgios, 23, Australia, in a three-set contest 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the 4th round to reach the QFs of the tournament. Kyrgios though hammered 18 Aces in the match to 12 by Coric. But, Coric broke Kyrgios’ service 4 times while the latter broke his service twice. Coric won 5 games in a row to 3 by Kyrgios. Coric’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve (78% 7 65 %) was better than that of Kyrgios (71% & 40%). Coric will face Aliassime in the QFs on March 28, 2019.
Defending champion and World No 9 John Isner, 33, USA, also entered the QFs beating World No 22 Kyle Edmund, 24, UK, 7-6, 7-6 in the 4th round on March 26, 2019, night. Isner hammered 18 Aces in the match to 10 by Edmund. Both the players won 1 break point each. Edmund, however, committed 3 double faults to 1 by Isner. Isner will face World No 25 Roberto Bautista Agit, 30, Spain, in the QFs on March 28, 2019.
