Patna : India ere all out for 337 runs in 95.5 overs in the first session of play on Day 4 in their first innings in the 1st test against England at M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, Tamilnadu, on  February 8, 2021, with spinner Washington Sundar scoring an unbeaten 85 in 138 balls with 12 fours and 2 sixes, his second fifty plus score in only his second test, and fellow spinner Ravichandran Ashwin scoring 31 in 91 balls hitting 3 fours and 1 six. Sundar and Ashwin added 80 runs for the 7th wicket.

Although India conceded a 241 runs lead to England on first innings, the latter did not enforce the follow on but had a disastrous start to their 2nd innings as opener Rory Burns was out first ball bowled  by Ravichandran Ashwin, who opened the attack for the hosts. Spinner Shahbaz Nadeem bowled the 2nd over. England were 1/1 in 2 overs at lunch.

Resuming at their overnight score of 257/6, India added 80 runs to their total in the first session of play on Day 4 losing 4 wickets. Sundar hit pacer James Anderson and Joe Root Leach for one six each. Ashwin hit a six of spinner Dom Bess. Ashwin fell to spinner Jack Leach for 31 making it 305/7. Shahbaz Nadeem also fell to Leach for zero and it was 312/8. Fast bowler Ishant Sharma fell to pacer James Anderson for 4 and it was 323/9. Jasprit Bumrah also fell to Anderson for zero and India were all out for 337. Anderson and Leach took two wickets each on Day 4.
