Patna : Electing to bat first, India made 281/7 in 50 overs against Australia in the first of the five-match ODI series at M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on September 17, 2017, with all rounder Hardik Pandya scoring a whirlwind 83 of 66 balls and M S Dhoni scoring 79 of 88 balls changing the direction of the game in a 118 run stand. Pandya hit four sixes.

India were off to a disastrous start losing first three wickets including that of skipper Virat Kohli for only 11 runs. Kohli and Manish Pandey failed to open their accounts while Ajinkya Rahane score five runs. Rohit Sharma, who opened the inninngs with Rahane, scored 28 runs while Kedar Jadhav made 40 runs. Bhuvanesgwar Kumar made an unbeaten 32 of 30 balls. For Australia, Nathan Coulter Nile took 3/44. Pat Cummins failed to get any wicket. After 45 overs India were 228/6. Australia will have to score 282 runs to win.
