Patna : India on January 27, 2018, defeated South Africa by 63 runs in the third cricket test at New Wanderers Park, Johannesbug, South Africa, avoiding a whitewash in the three-match test series and salvaging some pride in the process. South Africa, who needed to score 242 runs to win the third test, were all out for 177 in 73.4 overs on the fourth day of the match post-tea due to brilliant and incisive bowling by the Indian fast bowlers. South Africa won the three-match series 2-1.
South Africa opener Dean Elgar remained unbeaten on 86 240 balls hitting 9 fours and a six. Hashim Amla made 52 in 140 balls hitting 5 fours. They were involved in a 119 run partnership for the second wicket. Amla was out when the South Africa score was 124 and after that A B de Villers was out for 6 at 131. de Villiers had made 5 in the first innings. Captain Faf du Plessis, who made 8 in the first inninsg, was bowled by Ishant Sharma for two when the score was 144. Wicketkeeper Quinton de Cock was lbw to Bumrah without scoring. Vernon Philander was bolwed by Mohammad Shami for 10 when the score was 157. Dean Elgar kept waging the lone battle but saw wickets falling regularly at the other end.
For India, Mohammad Shami took 5/28 in 12.3 overs while Ishant Sharma took 2/31 in 16 overs and Jasprit Bumrah 2/57 in 21 overs. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar took 1/39 in 18 overs. Sharma took the wickets of Amla and du Plessis while Bumrah accounted for de Villiers and de Cock. Shami, who had taken the wicket of opener Aiden Markram on the third day on January 26, took the wickets of Vernon Philander, Andile Phehukwayo, Morne Morkel, and Lungisani Ngidi on January 27.
India had made 187 in their first innings and 247 in the second innings. South had made 194 in their first innings and were all out for 177 in their second innings. Bumrah took seven wickets in the match while Shami took six. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar took four wickets while Sharma took three wickets in the match. Bhuvaneshwar was declared Player of the Match for his all round performance. He had scored 30 in the first innings and 33 in the second. India played without a spinner in the match.
