Patna : India declared their first innings at 502/7 in 136 overs at a run rate of 3.69 after tea on Day 2 in the 1st test against South Africa (SA) at Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatna, on October 3, 2019, after adding 300 runs to their overnight score of 202/0.

Rohit Sharma scored 176 with 23 fours and 6 sixes while his opening partner Mayank Anurag Agarawal scored 215 with 23 fours and 6 sixes. Rohit and Agarwal added 317 runs for the first wicket. Captain Virat Kohli scored 20 while Cheteswar Pujara made 6. Ajinkya Rahane scored 15 while Hanuma Vihari made 10. Wriddhiman Saha (wk) scored 21 in 16 balls with 4 fours while all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten on 30 in 46 balls with 1 six. Ravichandra Ashwin remained unbeaten on 1 in 17 balls.

For South Africa, spinner Keshav Maharaj took 3/189 in 55 overs while Dane Piedt took 1/107 in 19 overs. Senuran Muthusamy took 1/63 in 15 overs. Vernon Philander took 1/68 in 22 overs while Dean Elgar took 1/4 in 1 over. Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada went wicketless despite bowling 24 overs conceding 66 runs.
