Patna : India declared their first innings at 497/9 in 116.3 overs just before tea on Day 2 in the third test against South Africa (SA) at JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi, Jharkhand, on October 20, 2019, with fast bowler Mohammad Shami unbeaten on 10 including a six and spinner Shahbaz Nadeem on 1 not out.

Resuming at their overnight score of 224/3, India added 273 runs in the first two sessions of the play on Day 2. Fast bowler Umesh Yadav scored 31 runs in just 10 balls hitting 5 sixes, all off spinner George Linde, who finished with 4/133 in 31 overs. Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada took 3/85 in 23 overs. Fast bowler Anrich Nortje and spinner Dane Piedt took one wicket each.

Opener Rohit Sharma scored 212 in 255 balls with 28 fours and 6 sixes, his first test double century, while Ajinkya Rahane scored 115 in 192 balls with 17 fours and a six. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja scored 51 runs in 119 runs with 4 fours, a slow scoring by his standard. Ravichandran Ashwin fell to spinner Dane Piedt for 14. Wriddhiman Saha fell to George Linde for 24 in 42 balls with 3 fours. Yadav also fell to Linde. Debutant spinner Shahbaz NadeemĀ  scored his first run in test cricket.
