Patna : India beat West Indies (WI) by 6 wickets in a high scoring 1st T20I at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad, on December 6, 2019, night, to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Replying to WI’s 20-7/5 in 20 overs, India scored 209/4 in 18.4 overs with captain Virat Kohli scoring a brilliant unbeaten 94 in 50 balls hitting 6 fours and 6 sixes while opener Lokesh Rahul scored 62 in 40 balls with 5 fours and 4 sixes. Rishabh Pant (wk) made 18 in 9 balls with 2 sixes.

India had won the toss but opted to bowl. It was Kohli’s highest score in T20Is. He scored his last 68 runs in 25 balls only.  Kohli was declared Player of the Match.

India lost their first wicket at 30 with opener Rohit Sharma getting out to spinner Khary Pierre for 8.Kohli and Rahul added 100 runs for the 2nd wicket. Rahul fell to Khary Pierre for 62 making it 130/2. Kohli then added 48 runs for the third wicket with Rishabh Pant. Pant fell to fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell for 18 making it 178/3. Shreyas Iyer fell to WI captain Kieron Pollard for 4 and it was 193/4. WI bowler Kesrick Williams conceded 60 runs in 3.4 overs without taking any wicket.

Earlier,  WI scored 207/5 with Shimron Hetmyer scoring 56 in 41 balls hitting 2 fours and 4 sixes while opener Evin Lewis scored 40 in 17 balls hitting 3 fours and 4 sixes. Kieron Pollard made 37 in 19 balls with a four and 4 sixes. Brandon King scored 31 in 23 balls with 3 fours and a six. Jason Holder remained unbeaten on 24 in 9 balls with a four and 2 sixes. WI hit 15 sixes in the match to 12 by India.
