Patna : India beat Australia by 137 runs in the third test at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne, Australia, on December 30, 2018, to take an unassailable 2-1 lead in the four-match series. India have retained the Border – Gavaskar Trophy. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who took nine wickets in the match, was declared Player of the Match.
Resuming at their overnight score of 258/8, Australia were all out of 261. The last two wickets of Australia fell on 261. Pat Cummins fell to Jasprit Bumrah for 63 with 5 fours and six while Nathan Lyon fell to Ishant Sharma for 7. Bumrah took 3/53 while Ishant Sharma took 2/40. Ravindra Jadeja took 3/82 and Mohammad Shami 2/71. Ishant has now taken 267 wickets in his test career. Indian bowlers took 20 wickets in the match while their Australian counterparts could take only 15 wickets.
Bumrah, who made his test debut in South Africa in January 2018, has taken 48 wickets in his debut year. Former Australian fast bowler Terry Alderman, now 62, had taken 54 wickets in his debut year in 1981 while former fast bowler Curtly Ambrose, West Indies, now 55, had taken 49 wickets in his debut year in 1988.
Captain Virat Kohli said Bumrah won us the Melbourne test. Kohli also lauded opener Mayank Agarwal saying he displayed great character in his debut test. India would like to win the 4th test too at Sydney, Kohli said. Australia captain Tim Paine said we were probably playing against the best pace attack in the world right now.
This was India’s fourth overseas test victory in 2018 including one each in South Africa and England and two in Australia. India have played 14 tests in 2018 winning 7 of them including three at home.
India had won the toss and opted to bat. India declared their first innings at 443/7. Australia were all out for 151 in their first innings with Bumrah taking 6/33. India did not enforce follow on and declared their second innings at 106/8 with Pat Cummins taking 6/27. Set a target of 399, Australia were all out for 261 in their second innings.
