Patna : India started their ICC Under-19 World Cup campaign in style on January 14, 2018, by defeating Australia by 100 runs in their first match at Mount Maunganui, New Zealand. Electing to bat first after winning the toss, India scored 328/7 in 50 overs with Captain and opener Prithvi Shaw leading from the front making 94 runs in 100 balls and his opening partner Manojit Kalra scoring 86 in 99 balls.

Shaw, who hit 8 fours and 2 sixes in his 94, was declared Man of the Match. Kalra hit 12 fours and a six in his 86. Shubham Gill, who made 63 in 54 balls, hit 6 fours and a six. For Australia, Jack Edwards took 4/65.

Australia were all out for 228 in 42.5 overs with Jack Edwards scoring 73 in 90 balls hitting 6 fours and a six, Jonathan Merlo 38 in 42 balls and Max Bryant 29 in 48 balls. Wicketkeeper Baxter Hold scored 39 in 30 deliveries hitting 3 fours and a six. Austin Waugh, son of former Australia Captain Steve Waugh, made only six runs. For India, Shivam Mavi took 3/ 45 in 8.5 overs and fast fast bowler Kamlesh Nagarkoti 3/29 in seven overs.

The first Indian wicket that of Shaw fell at 180 and that of Kalra at 200. It was India’s highest score against Australia in ICC Under -19 World Cup.
