Patna :India were all out for 198 runs in 67.3 overs in the second session of play their second innings in 3rd test against South Africa (SA) at Newlands, Cape Town, SA, on day 3 on January 13, 2022,with Rishabh Pant (wk) scoring an unbeaten 100 in 139 balls, his 4th test ton, setting a target of 212 runs for the host with one session and two more days left to the match. Pant, who was dropped at 88 and 94 runs, reached his century in 133 balls with 6 four and 4 sixes. It was one of the best knocks of Pant. India had scored 223 runs in first innings while SA had scored 210 in their first innings.
Resuming at their overnight score of 57/2, India lost the wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara (9) and Ajinkya Rahane (1) within 2 overs of the first session of play on day 3 making it 58/4. But, captain Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant added 94 runs for the 5th wicket. Kohli fell to fast bowler Lungi Ngidi for 29 in 143 balls with 4 fours and it was 152/5.
Kohli’s departure led to batting collapse. with Ravichandran Ashwin (7) , Shardul THakur (5), Umesh Yadav (0), and Mohd Shami (0) soon returning to pavilion making it 189/9/8. But, Pant kept waging the one man battle reaching his century with Jasprit Bumrah (2) at the other end.
For SA, fast bowler Marco Jansen took 4/36 in 19.3 overs while fellow fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi taking three wickets each.. Rabada has taken 20 wickets in the series while Marco Jansen has taken 19 wickets.
