Patna : India scored 307/6 in 87 overs at stumps in their first innings in the third test against England at Trentbridge, Nottingham, UK, on August 18, 2018, riding on 97 by captain Virat Kohli and 81 by Ajinkya Rahane. Kohli and Rahane were involved in a 159 run partnership for the 4th wicket. England, who lead the five-test series 2-0, won the toss but opted to bowl. Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was batting on 22 in 32 ball with one six and 2 fours at stumps.

Openers Shikhar Dhawan and Lokesh Rahul were involved in a 60 run partnership for the first wicket. Dhawan was the first to get out after scoring 35 while Rahul was out after scoring 23 when the score was 65. Cheteswar Pujara’s poor run continued as he got out after scoring just 14 when the team score was 82. Both Kohli and Rahane missed scoring centuries. Kohli hit 11 fours in his 97 in 152 ball while Rahane hit 12 fours in his 81 in 131 ball. Hardik Pandya scored 18 with 4 fours.

For England, allrounder Chris Woakes, who had hit centursy in the 2nd test, took 3/75. Stuart Broad and James Anderson took one wicket each. Spinner Adil Rashid also took one wicket.

India made three changes in their playing eleven bringing in Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah in the 3rd test dropping Murli Vijay, Kuldeep Yadav, and wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik. Murli Vijay had made zero in both the innings of the second test. Karthik had scored just 21 runs in the first two tests. Dhawan was dropped after the first test. England brought in allrounder Ben Stokes in place of Sam Curran.
