Patna : India were 257/6 in 74 overs in their first innings at stumps on Day 3 in the first test against England at M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, Tamilnadu, on February 7, 2021, as spinner Dominic Bess better known as Dom Bess, 23, took 4/55 in 23 overs and fast bowler Jofra Archer took 2/52 in 16 overs. India trail by 321 runs with only 4 wickets in hand.

At stumps, Washington Sundar was batting on 33 in 68 balls hitting 5 fours while Ravichandran Ashwin was unbeaten on 8 in 54 balls. Sundar and Ashwin have so far added 32 runs in their unbeaten partnership for the 7th wicket. Earlier, Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant (wk) added 119 runs for the 5th wicket to bring India back into the game after they were reduced to 73/4 in 26.3 overs with Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, captain Virat Kohli, and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane back to the pavilion.

Pujara fell to Dom Bess for 73 runs in 143 balls with 11 fours, his 4th fifty plus score in last 5 test innings, and it was 192/5. Pujara was unlucky to get out as the ball hit the helmet of a fielder and went to another fielder who took an easy catch. Pant, who was particularly severe on spinner Jack leach, fell to Dom Bess for 91 in 88 balls hitting 9 fours and 5 sixes and it was 225/6. Pant had also missed century in 3rd test against Australia in Australia recently.

Earlier, resuming at their overnight score of 555/8, England were all out for 578 in 190.1 overs. Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandra Ashwin took three wickets each while Ishant Sharma and Shahbaz Nadeem took two wickets each.
