Patna : India were 250/9 in their first innings at stumps on day 1 of the first test against Australia at Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, Australia, on December 6, 2018, thanks to a fantastic 123 in 246 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes by Cheteshwar Pujara, his 16th test century. Mohammad Shami was batting on 6 at stumps.
Electing to bat after winning the toss, India made a disastrous start losing their first three wickets including that of captain Virat Kohli for just 19 runs on board. Openers Lokesh Rahul and Murli Vijay departed for 2 and 11 runs respectively while Kohli scored 3. Ajinkya Ranahe scored 13 runs with a six while Rohit Sharma scored 37 in 61 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes.
But, Pujara stood tall amidst ruins and added 62 runs for 7th wicket with Ravichandran Ashwin, who scored 25. He also added 41 runs for 6th with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant who scored 25 with 2 fours and a six. Pujara also added 40 runs with Mohammad Shami for the 9th wicket. Pujara was run out when the score was 250. But, it was indeed a classy but gritty knock.
For Australia, fast bowlers Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Lyon took two wickets each.
