Patna : India were 202/0 in 59.1 overs at tea in their first innings on Day 1 in the first test against South Africa at Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam, with opener Rohit Sharma scoring an unbeaten 115 in 174 balls hitting 12 fours and 5 sixes, his 4th test century and first as an opener, and his opening partner Mayank Agarwal batting on 84 in 183 balls hitting 11 fours and 2 sixes, his highest score in five tests. The play was stopped just few minutes before tea due to an overcast sky.

The day belonged to Rohit Sharma, the Hit-Man, who completed his century in 154 balls and has added 202 for the first wicket with Mayank in an unbroken partnership. His unbeaten 115 was a show of attractive strokes. He was particularly severe on spinners hitting Dane Piedt for three sixes and Keshav Maharaj for two sixes. Captain Virat Kohli was seen clapping when Sharma scored his first century as an opener. Rohit hit Vernon Philander for two fours in his 11th over.
