Patna : India were 17/3 in 11.5 overs at stumps on the first of day of the first test against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on November 16, 2017.  Captain Virat Kohli and opener K L Rahul were out out without scoring while another opener Shikhar Dhawan departed after scoring 8 runs.

All the three Indian wickets were taken by Sri Lankan pacer Suranga Lakmal in a devastating opening spell. In fact, Lakmal took  3/6 in six over three of which were maiden. Cheteswar Pujara was batting on 8 runs made in 43 balls and Ajinkya Rahane was yet to score at stumps. Sri Lanka skipper Dinesh Chandimal won the toss but opted to bowl under overcast condition.
