Patna : India struggled to reach 122/5 in 55 overs at stumps on rain affected Day 1 in their first innings in 1st Test against New Zealand (NZ) at Basin Reserve, Wellington, NZ, with vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane unbeaten on 38 in 122 balls hitting 4 fours and Rishabh Pant (wk) batting on 10 in 37 balls with 1 four. NZ won the toss and opted to bowl. NZ batsman Ross Taylor is playing his 100th test. India brought in Rishabh Pant (wk) ahead of Wriddhman Saha and Ravichandran Ashwin in the match.
Batting first, India made a horrendous start losing three wickets in the first session in windy condition and another two wickets in the second session before play was stopped due to rain. Making his test debut, 6’8″ tall NZ fast medium bowler Kyle Jamieson took 3/38 in 14 overs, a dream test debut taking the wickets of Cheteswar Pujara (11), captain Virat Kohli (2), and Hanuma Vihari (7).
India lost their first wicket at 16 when opener Prithvi Shaw fell to medium fast bowler Tim Southee for 16 in 18 balls with 2 fours. Cheteswar Pujara fell to Kyle Jamieson for 11 making it 35/2. Virat Kohli also fell to Jamieson for 2 making it 40/3. Opener Mayank Agarwal and Ajinkya Rahane added 48 runs for the 4th wicket. Agarwal fell to fast bowler Trent Boult for 34 in 84 balls with 5 fours making it 88/4. Hanuma Vihari fell to Jamieson for 7 and it was 101/5. India scored 79 runs in 28 overs in the first session losing 3 wickets. Kohli’s poor form continues.
