Bagaha : Illegal sand mining is going on with impunity for the past several months near Tharhi, Kailashpur, Bharihani, Piparakutti villages on raiyati land under  Valmikinagar police station in West Champaran district causing ecological imbalance. Sand mafias ignoring mining laws have resorted to deep digging to extract sand.

Sources said that sand mafias also use  JCB for extracting sand and boulders from raiyati land during night and tractor – trailers transport it in  broad daylight even as SSB Tharhi Border Outpost  (BOP) is located few hundred  metres away from the spot. Valmikinagar police remains a silent spectator though the area falls under Valmikinagar Tiger Reserve (VTR)  zone. Mining activities is not allowed in a radius of 9km of this zone.

One Arshad Alam of Valmikinagar has requested DM, West Champaran, Nilesh Ramchandra Deore, SDM, Bagaha, Vijay Prakash Meena, Mining Development Officer, Bettiah, besides SP, Bagaha, Arvind Kumar Gupta, and VTR authorities  to check the illegal sand mining but to no avail so far.
