Patna : Reigning Wimbledon Champion and World No 4 Simona Halep, 27, Romania, and former Australian Open Champion and World No 19 Caroline Wozniacki, 29, Denmark, entered the women’s singles 2nd round of US Open at New York City, New York, USA, on August 28, 2019, early morning. But, World No 10 and 2017 US Open Champion Sloane Stephens, 26, USA, tumbled out of the tournament losing in the first round.

Halep, the winner of two Grand Slam singles titles, beat World No 135 Nicole Gibbs,26,  USA, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in first round. Halep won 7 break points in the match to 5 by Gibbs. Halep won 3 games in a row in the match to 2 by the American.

Wozniacki beat World No 50 Wang Yafan, 25, China, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 in first round coming from behind. Both the players won 3 break points each in the match. Yafan though won 5 games in a row to 3 by Wozniacki. Wozniacki won 53 service points to 50 by Yafan.

World No 127  Anna Kalinskaya, 20, Russia, upset Stephens 6-3, 6-4 in first round. Anna won 3 break points in the match to 1 by Stephens. Anna also won 4 games in a row in the match to 2 by the 11th Amerrican. Anna’s winning percentage on both her first and second serve was higher than that of Stephens.
