Patna : Three-time champion and 2nd Rafael Nadal, 33, Spain, defeated World No 60 John Millman, 30, Australia, to enter the 2nd round of US Open at New York City, New York, USA, on August 28, 2019, early morning. But, World No 4 Dominic Thiem, 25, Austria, and World No 9 Karen Khachanov, 23, Russia, crashed out of the tournament losing in the first round.

Nadal beat Millman 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round breaking the latter’s service five time s in the match besides winning 9 games in a row.

Nadal fired 6 Aces in the match to 4 by the Australian. Nadal, however, also committed 3 double faults. Nadal’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve ( 75 % & 70%) was much higher than that of Millman ( 60 % & 40 %). The Spaniard won 54 service points to 47 by the Australian. Nadal will face Australian World No 203 Thanasi Kokkinakis, 23,  in 2nd round.

World No 87 Thomas Fabbiano, 30, Italy, stunned World No 4 Thiem 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in first round causing a majour upset in the tournament. Thiem though fired 14 Aces in the match to 10 by the Italian. Fabbiano, however, won 4 break points in the match to just 1 by 4th seed Thiem, the French Open finalist in both 2018 & 2019. The Italian won 5 games in a row in the match to 3 by the Austrian. Fabbiano won 78 service points to 63 by the Austrian.

World No 216 Vasek Pospisil, 29, Canada, stunned World No 9 Karen Khachanov, 23, Russia, in a five-set marathon in the first round. The Canadian beat 9th seed Khachanov 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to enter the 2nd round. Pospisil fired 15 Aces in the match to 7 by the Russian. Pospisil won 4 break points in the match to 3 by the Russian. The Canadian committed 7 double faults to 9 by the Russian in the match. Both the players won 3 games each in a row in the match.

World No 13 Gael Monfils, 32, France, entered the 2nd round defeating World No 51 Albert Ramos-Vinolas, 31, Spain, 7-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round. Monfils fired 8 Aces in the match to 1 by Vinolas. Monfils won 5 break points in the match to 2 by the Spaniard, who committed 7 double faults. Both the players won 3 games each in a row in the match.

World No 30 Nick Kyrgios, 24, Australia, defeated World No 86 Steve Johnson, 29, USA, 6-3, 7-6, 6-4 to enter the 2nd round. The Australian fired 24 Aces in the match to 4 by the American. Kyrgios, however, also committed 8 double faults to 4 by Johnson. The Australian won 4 break points in the match to 1 by the American. Kyrgios won 5 games in a row in the match to 2 by Johnson.

World No 33 Denis Shapovalov, 20, Canada, upset fast rising compatriot Felix Auger Aliassime, 19, the 18th seed, 6-1, 6-1, 6-4 to enter the 2nd round. Shapovalov won 6 break points in the match to none by World No 19 Aliassime. Shapovalov committed 8 double fault to 6 by Aliassime. Shapovalov also won 7 games in a row in the match.
