Patna : World No 39 in WTA rankings Aryna Sabalenka, Belarus, beat World No 2 Caroline Wozniacki, 27, Denmark, in the second round of Rogers Cup, Toronto, Canada, in a massive upset at the tournament on August 10, 2018. Sabalenka beat Wozniacki 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 to enter the third round.  Sabalenka fired 15 Aces in the match to 3 by Wozniacki. But, Sabalenka also committed 11 double faults to 7 by Wozniacki. Sabalenka, however, lost to World No 15 Elise Merten, Belgium,  in Round of 16 in three-sets.

But, World No 1 Simona Halep beat winner of 7 Grand Slam titles and World No 14 Venus Williams, 38, USA, to reach the quarters-finals of the tournament. Halep beat Venus 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 16 in a one sided match. Halp won 5 break points to just 1 by Venus. She, however, did not serve a single Ace while Venus served 1.

World No 5 Elina Svitolina, Ukraine, also entered the quarters-finals defeating  World No 43 Johana Konta, UK, 6-3, 6-4 in the third round. World No 6 Caroline Garcia, France, also entered the quarters-final beating Maia Sharapova, 32, 6-3, 6-2 in the Round of 16.
