Gopalganj: Gopalganj police on December 30 carried out raids in and around village Bhagvanpur after recovery of huge amount of scrapped currency notes of Rs 500 denomination from a field on December 29.

It may be mentioned here that scrapped currency notes of Rs 500 denomination worth over Rs 50 lakh was found thrown in a field near village Bhagvanpur under Baikunthpur police station of the district. Local police reached the spot but could and recovered only Rs 15,000 cash and a cement bag in which the cash was kept. Gopalganj DM Rahul Kumar has constituted a team led by LDM to inquire about the recovery of cash.

Though police  teams conducted raids at several places, they failed to get any clue. Several persons have been interrogated in this connection but they could not provide any detail about the person, who had dumped the  currency notes in the field. Not a single person turned up at any bank to exchange the notes as they feared legal  action by the  district administration.

Baikunthpur police station Inspector Sanjay Kumar, SHO Indrajit Kumar and ASI Lalan Kumar reached Central Bank of India, State Bank of India, Central Co-operative Bank and Sahara India at Baikunthpur and started investigation on the basis of the serial numbers of the currency notes seized. A police team is also keeping an eye on the persons, who are involved in exchange of currency notes in different banks after demonetization. Gopalganj DM Rahul Kumar said the district police were doing their job.
