Gopalganj: Civil Surgeon (CS), Gopalganj, Dr Madheshwar Prasad Sharma on Thursday started probe into the death of a newborn at Sadar Hospital in the wee hours on November 1 for want of oxygen. The probe follows an order from Gopalganj DM Rahul Kumar asking Dr Sharma to carry out a probe into the death and take action against the erring employees of the hospital.
Dr Sharma questioned several employees who were on duty on that particular day. He questioned the employees right from delivery ward to those deployed in the emergency ward of the hospital. Dr Devesh, who was on duty at the time of the incident, told CS that Lovely Devi, a native of village Karariya under Town police station, was admitted to hospital after she developed labour pain on October 31 night. He said that Lovely gave birth to a baby the same night. He also said that the child’s growth was not proper in the mother’s womb and even the report of Ultrasound had mentioned about it. He said that the heart beat of the baby ranged from 90 to 98.
Dr Devesh said that the baby was administered oxygen in the delivery room and after his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Emergency Ward. He said that he attended 38 patients when he was duty on that night. “I only sat on my chair after attending the patients,” he said adding that Lovely’s family members levelled allegations that he was sleeping at that time. The Civil Surgeon said that the inquiry would continue.
