Bagaha : River Gandak is posing serious threat to Amawa Khas, a 9 km long embankment in Kushinagar District in UP which connects to middle portion of Pipara- Piparasi embankment in Bihar, near Karbala in Jagiraha panchayat under Thakaraha block in West Champaran District in North Bihar.
Bhikham Majhi, Mukhia of Jagiraha panchayat, said that Amawa Khas embankment connecting to Pipara-Piparasi embankment in Bihar, protects us but river Gandak is eroding it very fast and panicked villagers of Lakshmipur are shifting to safer places due to indifferent attitude of flood protection engineers in Kushinagar District in UP.
Bihar’s Flood Control Egineer Mohammed Abdul Mazid, an expert, accompanied by Pipara -Piparasi embankment Executive Engineer Amarendar Singh and others visited Amawa Khas embankment on September 20, 2019. He said that the river is eroding land in Bihar but the embankment was made there by UP Government to protect land of Bihar. He has intimated UP flood control engineers about the situation.
Mukhia of Jagiraha panchayat said that due to fast erosion by river Gandak twenty-four families of village Bharpatia in Dhumnagar panchayat, located between Gandak and the embankment, have already shifted and are living under open Sky. The residents of village on Bihar-UP border fear that if Amawa Khas embankment breaches, five panchayats under Thakaraha block will be inundated besides fifty villages in Kushinagar district in UP. Meanwhile, BDO, Thakaraha Block, Sheikh Sani and Circle Officer Chandrashekhar Tiwari have informed the district authorities about the flood situation.
