Patna : World No 10 Fabio Fognini, 32, Italy, and World No 12 John Isner, 34, USA, World No 18 Marin Cilic, 30, Croatia, and World No 24 Diego Schwartzman, 26, Argentina, advanced to the second round of Wimbledon Championships at London, UK, on July 2, 2019, night.

Fognini, the 12th seed, beat World No 38 Frances Tiafoe, 21, USA, in a five-set marathon 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the first round. Fognini fired 12 Aces in the match to 13 by Tiafoe. The Italian won 6 break points to 5 by Tiafoe. Both the players won 4 games each in a row in the match. Fognini won 104 service points to 95 by the American.

Isner, who had reached Wimbledon semi-finals in 2018, beat Casper Ruud, 20, Norway, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 in the first round. Isner , the 9th seed, hammered 29 Aces in the match to 7 by Ruud. The American also won 2 break points to none by Ruud. Isner also won 3 games in a row.

Cilic, the 2014 US Open Champion and a Wimbledon finalist in 2017, beat World No 42 Adrian Mannarino, 31, France, 7-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the first round. Cilic fired 16 Aces in the match to 13 by Mannarino. Cilic, who had also reached Australian Open final in 2018, won 85 service points to 75 by Mannarino. Both the players won 3 games each in a row in the match.

Schwartzman beat World No 95 Matthew Ebden, Australia, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round. Ebden though fired 12 Aces in the match to just 1 by Schwartzman. Schwartzman won 7 break points to 4 by the Australian. Schwartzman won 5 games in a row in the match to 4 by Ebden.

World No 77 Ricardas Berankis, 29, Lithuania, upset World No 27 Denis Shapovalov, 20, Canada,  7-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round.
