Patna : World No 3 Roger Federer, Switzerland, and World No 5 Dominic Thiem, Austria, advanced to the 3rd round of Madrid Open, Spain, on May 7, 2019, late night.
Federer, winner of 20 Grand Slam singles titles and has returned to clay court season after 3 years, beat World No 39 Richard Gasquet, France, in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 in 52 minutes in the 2nd round. He broke Gasquet’s service thrice in the match besides winning 3 games in a row. Federer, 37, fired 7 Aces in the match to just 1 by Gasquet. Federer won 37 service points to 24 by Gasquet.
Thiem, who had recently won the Barcelona Open title, entered the 3rd round after World No 58 Reilly Opelka, 21, USA, retired in the third set due to injury. Opelka had won the first set 7-6 while Thiem won the 2nd set 6-3. Opelka fired 12 Aces in the match to 3 by Thiem, the winner of Indian Wells Masters title in March 2019.
