Federer enters 2nd round of AO 2020, Fucsovics stuns World No 13 Shapovalov

Patna : Six-time champion and World No 3 Roger Federer, 38, Switzerland, World No 8 Matteo Berrettini, 23, Italy, World No 67 Marton Fucsovics, 27, Hungary, World No 45 Sam Querrey, 32, USA, and World No 25 Guido Pella, 29, Argentina, entered the 2nd round of Australian Open (AO) 2020, the First Grand Slam of the Year, at Melbourne Park, Victoria, Australia, on January 20, 2020,

Third seed Federer beat World No 75 Steve Johnson, 30, USA, in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in first round winning 5 break points in the match. He hammered 11 Aces in the match to 3 by the American. Federer also won 5 games in a row in the match. He won 53 service points to 39 by Johnson.

Berrettini, the 8th seed, beat Andrew Harris, 25, Australia, a wild card entry, in straight sets 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 in first round winning 5 break points in the match besides winning 7 games in a row. Berrettini hammered 11 Aces in the match to 4 by the Australian. The Italian committed 5 double faults to 4 by the Australian, the World No 162.

Fucsovics stunned World No 13 Denis Shapovalov, 20, Canada, in four-sets 6-3, 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 to advance to the 2nd round of AO. Fucsovics won 6 break points in the match to 1 by 13th seed Shapovalov. The Canadian fired 7 Aces in the match to 3 by the Hungarian. Shapovalov committed 8 double faults to 5 by Fucsovics. The Hungarian won 6 games in a row to 3 by the Canadian.

Sam Querrey upset World No 28 and 28th seed Borna Coric, 23, Croatia, in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to enter the 2nd round. Querrey hammered 18 Aces in the match to 7 by Coric. He won 4 break points in the match to 1 by Coric.

Guido Pella, the 22nd seed, beat John- Patrick Smith, Australia, a wild card entry, in straight sets 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 to enter the 2nd round. Pella won 4 break points in the match to 1 by Smith. Smith though fired 8 Aces in the match to 6 by Pella.

World No 32 Daniel Evans,  29, UK, the 30th seed, beat Mackenzie McDonald, USA, in a five-set marathon 3-8, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 battling back from two-sets down to enter the 2nd round. Evans won 9 break points in the match to 5 by McDonald. Evans won 5 games in a row in the match to 4 by the American. McDonald though fired 6 Aces in the match to 2 by Evans. But, McDonald also committed 6 double faults in the match to 3by Evans.
