Federer beats Djokovic to enter SFs of Nitto ATP Finals

Patna : Six-time champion and 3rd seed Roger Federer, 38, Switzerland, beat five-time champion and 2nd seed Novak Djokovic, 32, Serbia, in Group Bjorn Borg match in Nitto ATP Finals  on November 15, 2019, early morning, in straight sets to book a semi-final berth in the tournament dashing the Serbian’s hope of finishing as year end World No 1.

Federer beat Djokovic 6-4, 6-3 in just 73 minutes at O2 Arena, London, UK, to avenge his five-set 2019 Wimbledon final loss to the latter. The Swiss won 3 break points in the match to none by the Serbian. Federer hammered 12 Aces in the match to just 2 by Djokovic. The Swiss also won 3 games in a row in the match. Federer’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve ( 81 % & 82 %) was much higher than that of Djokovic ( 57 % & 54 %).

It was Federer’s first victory over Djokovic since 2015 ending his five match losing streak against the Serbian. Djokovic, however, still leads Federer 26-23 Head to Head.

Djokovic had won his first match in the Group to World No 8 Matteo Berrittini , 23, Italy, on November 10, 2019, but lost his second match to World No 5 Dominic Thiem, 26, Austria, on November 13. Federer, on the other hand, lost his first match to Thiem but won his second match against Berrettini on November 12. Thiem and Federer, both with two wins each, have qualified for the SFs from Group Bjorn Borg.
