Patna : Playing their 1,000th Test Match, England were 285/9 in 88 overs against India at stumps on the first day of first cricket at Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK, on August 1, 2018, with captain Joe Root scoring 80 (run out) with 9 fours and wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow scoring 70 with 9 fours.

England won the toss and elected to bat but lost the wicket of opener Alastair Cook for 13 when the team score was 26. Opener Keaton Jennings and Root were then involved in a 72 run partnership for the second innings. Jennings for was out for 42 when the score was 98. Allrounder Ben Stokes scored 21 while Jos Buttler was out for a duck. Dawid Malan made 8. Sam Curran was unbeaten on 24 and James Anderson was yet to open his account at stumps.

For India, spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took 4/60 while Mohammad Shami took 2/64. Umesh Yadav took 1/56 while Ishant Sharma took 1/46.

India dropped Cheteswar Pujara in view of his poor form and brought in Lokesh Rahul. India also ignored Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja for the match and instead played three pacers : Ishant Sharma, Mohammad Shami, and Umesh Yadav.
