Patna : England won the 3rd Ashes Test against Australia by one wicket at Headingley, Leeds, UK, before tea on Day 4 on August 25, 2019, with all-rounder Ben Stokes playing an incredible innings scoring an unbeaten 135 in 219 balls hitting 11 fours and 8 sixes, his 8th test century,  snatching victory from what at appeared a certain defeat after the fall of 9th wicket when the score was 286. It was England’s highest successful chase in test cricket.

Stokes added 76 runs with spinner Jack Leach for the 10th wicket with the latter contributing just 1 run in 17 balls. Interestingly, Stokes had scored his first two runs in 50 balls on August 24, 2019. Stokes single handedly won this test for England. Stokes was declared ‘Player of the Match’ for his match winning knock and 4 wickets including three in Australia’s 2nd innings. The five-match Ashes series is now locked 1-1.

Chasing a target of 359, England scored 362/9 in 125.4 overs  winning the3rd test after conceding a 112 run lead in first innings. England were shot out for just 67 runs in their first innings. Australia had scored 179 in their first innings and 246 in their second.

For Australia, Josh Hazlewood took 4/85 in 31 overs while spinner Nathan Lyon took 2/114 in 39 overs. James Pattinson and Pat Cummins took one wicket each. Hazlewood took 9 wickets in the match.

Resuming at their overnight score of 156/3, England lost their 4th wicket that of captain Joe Root when the score was 159. Root fell to spinner Nathon Lyon for 77. Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow (wk) then added 86 runs for the 5th wicket. Bairstow fell Hazlewood for 36 with 4 fours making it 245/5. Jos Buttler was run out for 1 and it 253/6. Chris Woakes fell to Hazlewood for 1 making it 261/7.  Jofra Archer fell to Lyon for 15 making it 286/8. Stuard Broad also fell at the same score to James Pattinson maki ng it 286/9.

After the fall of 9th wicket, Stokes treated all the Australian bowlers with disdain hitting Hazlewood for 19 runs including two sixers in his 31st. He also hit Lyon for a few sixes.
