Patna : England defeated Sri Lanka by 42 runs in the 3rd test at Sinhalese Sport Club, Colombo, Sri Lanka, on the 4th day of the match inflicting a 3-0 whitewash on the hosts. Set a target of 327 runs to win the match, Sri Lanka were all out for 284 in their second innings with Kusal Mendis scoring 86 (run out) in 129 balls with 8 fours and a six and Roshen Silva scoring 65 in 161 balls with 4 fours. Spinner Malinda Pushpakumara remained unbeaten on 42 in 40 balls with 6 fours and a six.

Sri Lanka had lost their 9th wicket with 226 on board. But, Pushpakumara and captain and fast bowler Suranga Lakmal added 58 runs for the 10th wicket to take the score to 284. Lakmal was the last man out for 11 in 38 balls. For England, spinners Moeen Ali and Jack Leach took four wickets each while Ben Stokes took one wicket.

Jonny Bairstow was declared Player of the Match for scoring 110 in England’s first innings while wicketkeeper Ben Foakes was declared Player of the series. Foakes also scored a century in the series. None of the Sri Lanka  batsmen could score a century in the series dominated by the spinners from both the sides.

England had scored 336 in the first innings and 230 in the second. Sri Lanka scored 240 in their first innings and 284 in the second. England had won the toss and opted to bat.
