Patna : Staging a tremenous comeback, England defeated India by 31 runs in the first cricket test on the fourth day of the match at Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK, due to superb bowling by allrounder Ben Stokes, James Anderson, and Stuart Broad.

Needing 194 runs to win the match India were all out for 162 in 54.2 overs with Captain Virat Kohli again being the top scorer getting out out for 51. Stokes took 4/40 while Anderson took 2/50 and Broad 2/43.

Apart from allounder Hardik Pandya ( 31), no other batsman made any siginicant contribution in the match. England have now taken 1-0 lead in the five-match test series. England were staring defeat after they were all out for 180 in their second innings. Kohli though stood tall amidst the ruins in both the innings scoring 200 runs in the test.

The abject surrender of the Indian batsmen raises question whether ignoring Rohit Sharma for the test series was a right decision, After all, he had scored century in both T20 and ODI series besdies scoring 97 in the first ODI in Ireland.
